Walter J. Browne

History

Walter Browne was known as Jack and John. Born on 14 November 1889, his parents were Edward Thomas Browne and Ellen Mary Wakeham. He had twelve siblings, at least 10 of which were born in Blakeville.[1]

Military Experience

On 19 July 1915 Jack Browne (5055) enlisted at Melbourne for service during World War One. At that time he was a 25 year old well borer. Browne listed his father as next of kin. Edward Browne was then living at 90 Gladstone Street, South Melbourne.[2]

Walter Brown was assigned to the 13th reinforcements for the 2nd Field Coy Engineers, Sydney on 16 December 1915. He left Australia on 17 December 1915 and disembarked in Egypt. He was transferred to 12th Field Coy Engineers at Tel-el-Kebir, Egypt on 18 March 1916. He left Alexandria on 04 June 1916, and disembarked at Marseilles on 11 June 1916. Browne was transferred to the Australian Electrical and Mechanical Mining and Boring Company (AE&MM&BC), Messines, Belgium on 14 June 1917.[3]

Sent to hospital sick with influenza in France on 28 October 1918. He died of bronchial pneumonia at the New Zealand Stationary Hospital, Wisques, France on 6 November 1918. He is buried at Souvenir Cemetery, Longuenesse (near St Omer).[4]
